Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides - Amboseli where common in the swamps, also on the river at Samburu.
*Madagascar Squacco Heron Ardeola idae - one seen over Zanzibar town.
Intermediate Egret Mesophoyx intermedia - seen in small numbers at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru.
Great Egret Casmerodius albus - Common at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru.
Grey Heron Ardea cinerea - Uncommon but present at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru
Purple Heron Ardea purpurea - A few seen in the swamps at Amboseli.
Goliath Heron Ardea goliath - A few seen at Amboseli and at Lake Nakuru.
Black-headed Heron Ardea melanocephala - the commonest large heron and often found in dry grassland.

Hamerkop Scopus umbretta - Around the Hotel Boulevard, Nairobi, Amboseli and Lake Naivasha
Saddle-billed Stork Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis - A few, including juveniles, seen Amboseli.
Marabou Stork Leptoptilus cruminiferus - A common and widespread scavenger, often on rubbish tips.
Yellow-billed Stork Mycteria ibis - A few in Amboseli but large flocks at Lake Nakuru
Sacred Ibis Threskiornis aethiopica - A common bird on almost any wetland.
Hadada Bostrychia hagedash - A noisy resident of the garden in Nairobi, also seen Amboseli, Lake Naivasha and at the farm campsite.
Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus - A few seen at Amboseli.
African Spoonbill Platalea alba - One or two seen at Amboseli
Greater Flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber - Less abundant than the Lesser but seen in good numbers at lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria.

Lesser Flamingo Phoeniconaias minor - abundant at Amnboseli, Lake Nakuru and especially Lake Bogoria.
White-faced Whistling Duck Dendrocygna viduata - Small flocks seen at Amboseli.
Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiacus - as everywhere else in Africa the commonest wildfowl species.
Red-billed Teal Anas erythrorhynca - Small numbers seen at Amboseli.
*Hottentot Teal Anas hottentota - a group of three seen at Amboseli.
Southern Pochard Netta erythropthalma - a few small flocks seen at Amboseli.
Black shouldered Kite Elanus caeruleus - Common in the Masai Mara and Nairobi NP, strangely absent elsewhere.
Black (Yellow-billed) Kite Milvus migrans parasitus - Very common, especially near settlements and lodges.
Hooded Vulture Necrosyrtes monachus - Common in the Masai Mara African
White-backed Vulture Gyps africanus - Common in National Parks and Reserves.

*Rueppell's Griffon Vulture Gyps ruepellii - Common in National parks and Reserves.
Lappet-faced Vulture Torgos tracheliotos - Small numbers seen at Amboseli, Samburu and Masai Mara where a nest was seen.
*White-headed Vulture Trigonoceps occipitalis - Pair seen Amboseli and a few at Masai Mara.
*Black-chested Snake Eagle Circaetus pectoralis - A few seen Samburu and Masai Mara.
Brown Snake Eagle Circateus cinereus - One or two at Samburu/Buffalo Springs.
Bateleur Terathopius ecaudatus - Common in Amboseli, Samburu/Buffalo Springs and Masai Mara
African Harrier Hawk (Gymnogene) Polyboroides typus - One seen over Isiolo town.
*Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus - a female was seen well hunting over the grassland at the entrance to Lake Nakuru NP.
Montagu's Harrier Circus pyagurgus - a male was seen hunting over grassland at Masai Mara.

Eurasian Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus - female seen Amboseli.
Gabar Goshawk Micronisus aequatorious - single seen at Amboseli.
Dark Chanting Goshawk Melierax metabates - single male seen Masai Mara
*Eastern Pale Chanting Goshawk Melierax poliopterus - seen Amboseli and Samburu. Often noted by the side of the road.
Augur Buzzard Buteo augur - A common and widespread raptor in all the areas we visited.
African Fish Eagle Haliaeetus vocifer - A few were at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru, but commonest at Lake Naivasha.
Tawny Eagle Aquila rapax - Possibly the commonest eagle seen. Multiples seen at Amboseli, Samburu, Lake Nakuru NP, Masai Mara and Nairobi NP.
Verreaux's (Black) Eagle Aquila verreauxi - Pair seen Hells Gate NP.
*Ayres's Hawk Eagle Hieraautus ayresii - Single adult seen perched at edge of woodland in Nairobi NP.

Long crested Eagle Lophaetus occipitalis - Two seen Hell's Gate NP.
Martial Eagle Polemaetus bellicosus - Singles seen Amboseli and Samburu.
*Pygmy Falcon Polihierax semitorquatus - Pair seen Amboseli.
Lanner Falcon Falco biarmicus - Singles seen on road to Amboseli and in Buffalo Springs National Reserve.
*Eleanora's Falcon Falco eleonorae - one dark bird seen flying with hirundines at Lake Bogoria.
Secretary Bird Sagittarius serpentarius - Seen Lake Nakuru NP, Hells Gate NP (5) and Nairobi NP (3).
Coqui Francolin Francolinus coqui - A covey was in the campsite at Samburu.
Crested Francolin Francolinus sephaena - Samburu.
Red-necked Spurfowl Francolinus afer - A covey in the campsite at Masai Mara.
*Yellow-necked Spurfowl Francolinus leucoscepus - Common in Amboseli, Samburu/Buffalo Springs and Nairobi NP

*Vulturine Guinea-Fowl Acryllium vulturinum - Common in Samburu/Buffalo Springs.
Helmeted Guinea-Fowl Numida meleagris - Common and widespread.
*Common Button-Quail Turnix sylvatica - one flushed from the roadside in Amboseli.
Black Crake Amauornis flavirostris - A few seen in the wetlands at Amboseli.
Common Moorhen Gallinula cholorpus - Lake Naivasha.
Red-knobbed Coot Fulica cristata - Nairobi NP.
Grey Crowned Crane Balearica regulorum- pair seen at Amboseli and another pair at Nairobi NP.
Kori Bustard Ardeotis kori - Seen in Amboseli and Samburu/Buffalo Springs.
*White-bellied Bustard Eupodotis senegalensis - A few seen at each of Amboseli, Samburu/Buffalo Springs and Masai Mara.
Black-bellied Bustard Eupodotis melanogaster - The commonest bustard, seen in Amboseli, Samburu/Buffalo Springs, Masai Mara and Nairobi NP.

African Jacana Actophilornis africanus - Common in the Amboseli swamps.
Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta - A few at Amboseli in the shallow pools fringing the swamps.
Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus - Very common in the Amboseli wetlands.
*Two Banded Courser Rhinoptilus africanus - three flushed by truck from dried out bed of Lake Amboseli.
*Madagascar Pratincole Glareola ocularis - one seen on Zanzibar.
Long-toed Plover Vanellus crassirostris - Common in the swamps at Amboseli.
Blacksmith Plover Vanellus armatus - Common in all of the areas visited other than Samburu/Buffalo Springs.
*Spur-winged Plover Vanellus spinosus - A few pairs were seen in the Samburu/Buffalo Springs area.
Crowned Plover Vanellus coronatus - Very common in most areas.
Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula - A few among African plovers at Lake Bogoria.

Kittlitz's Plover Charadrius pecuarius - Small numbers present at Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria.
Three Banded Plover Charadrius tricollaris - Small numbers seen Amboseli, Lake Nukuru and Lake Bogoria.
*Chestnut-banded Plover Charadrius pallidus - two seen Amboseli.
Little Stint Calidris minuta - Good numbers seen at Amboseli, Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria.
Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea - Good numbers at Amboseli, lake nakuru and Lake Bogoria.
Ruff Philomachus pugnax - Common at Amboseli, appeared to be mainly Reeves.
Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis- Common at Amboseli, a few at Lake Nakuru.
Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia - A few seen at Amboseli.
Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus - a few seen at Amboseli and a single at Mount Kenya.
Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola - Common at Amboseli.

Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos - Common at Amboseli, also seen Mara River and the only wader seen on Zanzibar.
*Sooty Gull Larus hemprichii - Small numbers off Zanzibar town.
Grey-headed Gull Larus cirrocephalus - Seen Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha.
*Gull-billed Tern Sterna nilotica - Amboseli.
*Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybrida - Lake Naivasha.
Black-faced Sandgrouse Pterocles decoratus - A few seen by the road at Amboseli.
Emerald Spotted Wood Dove Turtur chalcospilos - Amboseli and Samburu/Buffalo Springs.
Namaqua Dove Oena capensis - Seen almost everywhere in small numbers.
Speckled (Rock) Pigeon Columba guinea - Common in Nairobi, Naivasha, Nakuru and Masai Mara.
Feral Rock Dove Columba livia - common in built up areas. The only species of dove seen on Zanzibar.

Red-eyed Dove Streptopelia semitorquata - Common and widespread.
African Mourning Dove Streptopelia decipiens - Noted only at Amboseli.
Ring-necked Dove Streptopelia capicola - Common and widespread.
*Dusky Turtle Dove Streptopelia lugens - seen overflying the campsite on the private farm near Nakuru.
Laughing Dove Streptopelia senegalensis - Common and widespread.
*Red-fronted Parrot Poliocephalus gulielmi - Mount Kenya
*Fischer's Lovebird Agapornis fischeri - four seen at Lake Naivasha in the grounds of the Fish Eagle Inn.
